More chicken activities...

In the final week of Ridge Street Kids Club's chicken module we watched Chicken Run and the children were asked what the moral of the story was.

All children received stickers, but the best answers got more stickers.

Last week we had a meeting about what the children would like to do for Animal Club- their ideas were fantastic!

Brochure promoting caring for dogs

With the generous seed funding provided by Voiceless, our Animal Club got off to a great start by creating a brochure promoting caring for dogs which is about to go to print!

Mount Hawthorn Primary School - 13th August 2008

Mr Mitchell from the Department of Conservation and Land Management, came back again to bring us some games about the problems the Western Swamp Tortoise is facing. These games were lots of fun but also helped us to understand why the Western Swamp Tortoise has become endangered. This is because of habitat distruction, a lack of rainfall and because the tortoise is easily attacked by foxes.

Clifton Hills Primary School - 12th August 2008

This week at Animal Club, CHPS Animal Club members talked about Australian animals that are threatened due to habitat destruction, changed fire patterns, pollution and the introduction of foreign species such as foxes and feral cats.

To help us learn about the Australian animals that are dying for these reasons we worked together with a partner to complete the ‘Threatened animals Crossword Challenge’ that the Save the Bilby Fund has organised to raise awareness of threatened animals.

Our Animal Club has also registered to sell Bilby merchandise to raise awareness and money to help save the Bilby.  We will be selling this merchandise during our recess and lunch breaks leading up to Sunday 14th September 2008, which is National Bilby Day.

Did you know that the Bilby is the only Australian animal with it’s own National Day!

Doing the crossword was quite tricky and no-one finished so we will be completing these at home, ready to bring in and share next week.

If you are interested in finding out more about National Bilby Day, the crossword competition or anything Bilby, you can visit the Save the Bilby Fund website at:  www.savethebilbyfund.com.  They also have some great free Bilby screen savers for your computer at this site.

Bilby Update
The children and the teachers in Animal Club would like to thank every one that helped us raise money for the Save the Bilby Foundation. We raised over $428, and could not have done this without your kind generosity and support. Thank you!

Wishes for the animals!

This week's activity was wand decorating.  The children decorated their wands and came up with a wish for the animals.

The children's wishes included, "I wish there were no battery cages", and, "I wish people didn't eat animals.
